About Koh Chang

Koh Chang is one of the most beautiful and relaxing islands in Thailand. With it's sweeping bays, sandy beaches, great waterfalls and green jungle-covered peaks it's a tropical paradise for any traveler - from backpacker to luxury hotel guest. On Koh Chang all colours, cultures and nationalities mix and form the ingredients of a great island vibe!

Koh Chang - also known as 'Elephant Island' - is Thailand's second largest island after Phuket. Located around 300 kilometers from Bangkok in the Gulf of Thailand, near the Cambodian border. Around 70% of the island is covered with jungle forest, what gives it it's beautiful green colour. Koh Chang is part of the Mu Ko Chang National Park.

The weather

Koh Chang has a tropical climate with an annual temperature around 28 to 30 degrees Celsius that varies slightly through the year, resulting in year-round pleasant beach weather.

The island has roughly two different seasons - a dry season and rainy season.
Rainy season (Also referred
to as 'the green season') is from May to October and that's when the island gets most of it's rainfall. But don't let that scare you off! Most of the rain falls at night, what makes the temperature more comfortable. During the day you can get an occasional rain shower that will only last for a short period of time, where after the sun comes out again like nothing ever happened.

So, even during rainy season you'll get plenty of sunshine!

The green season might just be the right time for you to visit Koh Chang as there still is good weather with plenty of sunshine, but less visitors and lower room rates.

Average daily sunshine hours on Koh Chang

From November to March is dry season with blue skies and sunshine with just an exceptional rain shower.

During this time of year the temperature is slightly lower because of a gentle sea breeze. The same goes for the sea temperature.

Early high seasons has the best average visibility under water. But the visibility is most of the year generally good for diving and snorkeling activities. Trips can be booked year round to enjoy the beautiful marine life around Koh Chang.

The weather on Koh Chang is hard to predict. Where one part of the island gets a rain shower, just a few kilometer down the beach people won't notice a thing and are still sunbathing.

Weather forecast websites and apps can predict a certainty of rain for the whole island, but the chance of you being in that rain shower is very small. The mountain peaks on the island often function as a cloud-stopper, where one side of the mountain stays completely dry.

So, no matter what time of year you visit Koh Chang, it's unlikely you can't enjoy the tropical sunshine!

Klong Prao Beach

Koh Chang's west coast is where you'll find most of the islands sandy beaches. Watercolours is just 150 meters from Klong Prao Beach, which is the longest and one the best beaches on the island. It has a lovely long stretch of white sand beach which is split in two by the Klong Prao river estuary, where our resort is located.

Klong Prao Beach has limited development with a mix of beach restaurants, luxury resorts and a few backpacker options. Even in high season the beach doesn't get that busy.

Klong Prao Beach is a great beach for swimming! The flat sandy bottom gently becomes deeper and a handful of uninhabited islands just of the coast break the bigger waves that role in.

Because of the shallow sea at Klong Prao Beach the temperature of the water here is like a warm bath.

Activities

There is so much to do on Koh Chang! Not only the beaches, the surrounding islands and the sea make a great base for island hopping, snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing, also on the island itself there are plenty of activities.

The islands evergreen jungle-forest covers around 70% of the island and is great for visiting one of the many waterfalls, guided jungle trekking, kayaking or zip-lining through the treetops.

But if you want to take things a bit slower there is also a wide range of activities that are fun to do but not that exhausting, like a local village Tour, a Thai cooking class, a massage or spa-treatment, archery or rent a scooter and explore the island by yourself.

We have a list of all activities at our resort and we can book them for you without any extra charge. Most activities come with a free pick up and return taxi service from and to our resort.
